An innovative, partnership approach to student mental health

MCC Summary

MINDful College Connections: A Shared-Resource Consortium for Student Mental Health (MCC) program involves collaborative partnerships among institutions of higher education. MCC’s primary goal is to improve the capacity of member institutions to meet the growing need for mental health care services for their students.

One facet of the membership is that MCC has negotiated discounted consortium pricing with vendors such as Nearpeer, Togetherall, and Mantra Health to expand the variety of mental health and wellness services available at all tiers of our stepped care treatment model. Through Togetherall, lower tier services are available for all students, including psychoeducational readings, videos, interactive courses, mental health screenings, and an online peer support community. Through Mantra Health, higher tier services are available via telehealth, including individual counseling services, psychiatric services, and a 24/7/365 nation-wide crisis hotline. Additionally, Mantra Health enables institutions to offer an even greater diversity of treatment providers as well as appointment times outside of typical counseling center office hours.

Another facet is providing additional MCC-funded staff, one Mental Health and Wellness Educator and one Clinical Counselor, for each campus. The Mental Health and Wellness Educators conduct outreach and prevention programming and are critical for promoting the full menu of resources and services reflecting the stepped care model. The Clinical Counselor increase the capacity for in-person counseling services for those needing this level of care. By comprehensively supporting the mental health and wellness needs of our students with effective services at all tiers, subsequent increases in student retention and graduation rates are expected.

Finally, MCC is designed to facilitate collaboration across the consortium to inform our continued development of best practices. This is accomplished through institutional assessments, monthly collaboration meetings, and quarterly professional development trainings.
